ABOUT THE PROJECT

(Logo I made early in 2026 for the project).
Those who know me since 2025 will get the reference of why I always edit earbuds on my fan profile pics...

The Cillian Music Archive Project started when I discovered Cillian's radio shows in 2024. Listening to his music recommendations as well as his little anecdotes and stories through each show turned out to be highly educational and exciting. Finding out that Cillian was as passionate for music as I am, made me want to discover more of his film work, as well as his musical background.First I compiled all his radio shows with the help of some fans who throughout the years saved the episodes when they first broadcasted. Later I began to create fan compilations of the songs featured in his early films. This made me fall in love with film soundtracking and I met a lot of fans who felt the same way. And the later phases were about me learning more interesting musical facts from cillian through interviews and shared playlists curated by him.

Building this project had its ups and downs. At one point, I even considered giving up. However, my desire to share the knowledge and materials I had compiled with other fans encouraged me to perservere. And to this day, the project isn't finished; I plan to add more information and update the already existing sections, little by little, so that the project keeps expanding and evolving.Lastly, this is a non-profit, non-commercial fan project. There are no ads, no subscriptions, no data collection. The Cillian Music Archive Project is built and maintained by me and a few other fans who have volunteered to the project, whether by making fan art, designing banners, drafting information, sending and sharing music-related news and interviews, and so on.If you want to help testing, translating instructions, reporting bugs, or sharing ideas and bits of information, you are welcome to do so! This should be a community thing, after all. Reach out to me via X, Strawpage or for more complex/elaborate stuff, my email [email protected]

FILM SOUNDTRACKS & SCORES

When I started watching Cillian's films, one thing I noticed was the amazing choice of music that each project had as their film score. On his early works, 90s and 2000s indie tracks felt like a fresh opportunity to discover and listen to artists and bands I had never heard of. Some of which later Cillian would end up mentioning in his interviews. For some of the movies, trying to find the original film score or the official soundtrack album felt impossible, but I did my best to research, track and compile as many as I could. And for those compilations which didn't exist, I created them.So here you go, +15 soundtrack and original score albums from Cillian's movies.

If you woud like to request a film score/soundtrack from Cillian's movies that is not listed below, please reach out to me on my strawpage!

REMINDER: Read the FAQ section before trying to access the soundtracks! and remember that THE KEY opens your door!

Compiled by: CDsReleased in 1999, SUNBURN is Cillian's debut as lead actor in a feature film.It approaches a group of Irish youngsters with different lives and backgrounds, who travel to Long Island, New York in the hopes of having a memorable summer. The film encapsulates perfectly the sound of the 90s, where a fusion of Irish and American artists shapes a nostalgic yet entertaining piece of media.Sunburn features in its soundtrack artists such as Revelino, The Wondermints, The Wrens, among others. The High Llamas are credited as compositors of the original score pieces as well. Last but not least important, the film featured the music of the Irish-American band Paddy A Gogo, which song "Keep It Reel" had been LOST MEDIA until now.

We wanted something much more enduring and haunting,” adds Guiney.“We collaborated with well-known Irish composers Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer on the music score. They’ve done a lot of scores for feature films but are also working rock musicians and have a great feel for the DISCO PIGS”.- Ed Guiney, on the music for Disco Pigs. Digital Press Kit.

Interestingly enough, Carney composed and performed the song "The End of Nowhere" that can be heard at the end of the movie. In his other film projects, Carney usually featured original songs performed by the actors themselves, which has become part of his trademark, despite On the Edge not quite following that "musical movie" element (Lord, 2024).Nevertheless, one can agree that "the main consistent component in Carney’s movies is music." 28 DAYS LATER: The Soundtrack Album is the accompanying soundtrack to the 2002 film 28 Days Later. It was released on June 17, 2003. The original score was composed by John Murphy, and tracks from Brian Eno, Grandaddy and Blue States which featured in the movie also appear on the album."In the House - In a Heartbeat" is an instrumental track composed by John Murphy. The song is often mistakenly referred to as one of the other songs on the film's soundtrack, "East Hastings" by Canadian band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The track was featured over the climactic confrontation towards the end of the film. The name of the track seems to stem from the scene where Selena is tested to make good on her promise to kill Jim "in a heartbeat" if he ever became infected, as she had earlier promised she would (jowill1992, 2010).

28 Days Later (2002)

This film, adapted from a work of fiction by author Tracy Chevalier, tells the story about the events surrounding the creation of the painting 'GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING' by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. A young peasant maid working in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer becomes his talented assistant and the model for one of his most famous works. (Golden Globes, 2026).The task of writing the score for Girl With a Pearl Earring fell to Frenchman Alexandre Desplat. He is very much a composer of the “old school”, with a defiantly classical sound, along a richness in tone and texture. Desplat has an old-fashioned way with his music, and his scores draw out the emotion and drama in his films, composing with such dedication and effort, remaining wholly beautiful and approachable. Listeners of balanced orchestral scores, and of the more classically-influenced film composers are advised to seek out and enjoy Girl with a Pearl Earring. (Broxton, 2003)."While a full orchestra is employed for Girl With a Pearl Earring, the strings, woodwinds, and pianocarry the personality of the work." (Filmtracks.com, 2024)"Musically, Griet's Theme seems a perfect match for the character of the girl, played by Scarlett Johansson." (Classicfm, 2026).

Farrell recorded the song during a brief visit to Dublin in March. "We sort of bolted it together," says producer Frank Kearns. "I played guitar on it and did the recording in my own Salt Studios and then laid Colin's vocal on top in Windmill Lane. It's more like the Clash version than than the original – very raw and obviously made in Ireland!" (Hotpress, 2003).

From the treacly melodrama of Bobby Goldsboro’s “Honey” (Kitten’s theme song about a bereft young widower mourning his lost bride), to a stirring Handel chorale, to disco and punk, music is a powerful force in “BREAKFAST ON PLUTO.”“In a way, Patrick saw the whole world through songs, didn’t he?” says Neil Jordan, who chose the soundtrack selections “He kind of believed in the naïve sugary hopefulness of the lyrics of pop songs. So I decided that the whole burden of the soundtrack would be carried by songs from the era.” Apart from a few moments of piano music composed by Jordan’s daughter, Anna Jordan, the film avoids a conventional score. “Sometimes it seems that scores drown out the emotion in films these days,” notes Jordan. The title phrase, Breakfast on Pluto, comes from a ‘70s song by Don Partridge, a one-man-band folkie who still goes by the name of “King of the London Buskers.” The flamboyant music scene of the day is reflected not only in song selections: for example, smooth rock crooner Bryan Ferry is cast as a sinister Mercedes-driving assailant; the bar band “Billy Rock and the Mohawks” synthesizes various strains of entertainingly wretched pop, and Billy Rock is played by onetime punk hero Gavin Friday. Even the mascara and elephant-bell flares that Patricia sports as a young teen conjure up Marc Bolan and early Bowie.- Neil Jordan, on the music for Breakfast On Pluto. Digital Press Kit.

"I was excited that we were all doing this together. Wes Craven is a master at horror and manipulating the audience, and it was going to be great to have that opportunity in the service of a thriller. But where scoring horror is more of a ride where you're lookig for little things along the way to surprise the audience, suspense music needs to build up over time. That made it important to get some thematic stuff together right from the opening of RED EYE to musically present the characters, and let the audience know that they were going to be going on a thrill ride. I remember having a lot of fun with the brass players on this, because their work really pulled the score together. We used brass in a very different way from SCREAM, less with big sustains and triadic hard stuff and more with intricate and linear movement. The percussion was also a lot of fun, because you could make a lot of noise that really drove the score. I was eager to score RED EYE, because I knew it was a great way for Wes and me to show we could work together outside of the horror movies that people associated us with.We have camaraderie in the filmmaking process where a lot of things are up in the air until they're done. The trust that Wes and Patrick had in me translated into my music in ways that went even above horror and suspense."- Marco Beltrami, on the music for Red Eye.(Marco Beltrami. Ken Loach’s acclaimed THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2006. It takes a sympathetic look at Irish republicans in the early 20th century and the relationship between two brothers as the civil war unfolds.George Fenton has written the music for about 15 of Loach’s films. For the score of The Wind That Shakes The Barley, the composer takes a restrained and cautious approach throughout, where his music remains calm and respectful, careful to never overstep the mark and have even the faintest whiff of melodrama (Southall, 2012).The score for The Wind that Shakes the Barley had never been released commercially, having Fenton release only a promo CD on his own record label, Debonair, in late 2007 (Broxton, 2007). However, Kronos Records released a limited edition CD version back in 2012. Fast foward, in 2022 Shogun Music released a digital version of the soundtrack album (filmmusicreporter, 2022)."The main theme has an Irish lilt, as one might expect, and there is heavy emphasis on extended string chords and soft, muted woodwinds. The action music – cues like “Gogan Releases Lads” and “Ambush” – is led by percussion and piano, and is more about an enhanced rhythmic presence than anything else; this is tempered by some mournfully beautiful passages in “Chris Arrested”, which seem to echo the tragedy befalling the entire country at that time." Compiled by: CDSWATCHING THE DETECTIVES is a film released in 2007. Unfortunately this movie did not get an official soundtrack released. But one thing for sure is that throughout the scenes we hear non-mainstream rock bands from NZ, Canada, and the US, creating the indie music phase from those years (mid 2000s) which aligns with Soter's concept idea of Neil (Cillian) and Violet's (Lucy Liu) romantic and entertaining adventures being located in New York, where a lot of amazing indie and underground artists can be found, whether live or inside an album freshly bought from the record store."I'm from Denver, and there's a great area of Denver where it's all kind of mom-and-pop CD stores and movie rental places. And I always liked that atmosphere; it just seemed to me that a guy like this (Neil) would be in one of those sort of hipster enclaves. In terms of translating it to New York, I wanted something that would still be provincial about the setting, so it was really a matter of, 'All right, where can you still shoot very close to the city and try to have a college town somewhere?' It was cool to travel around a lot, some of it ended up taking place in this video store that we shot in Bayonne, N.J. It could be a part of Denver, it could be Pittsburgh." "Zimmer described the music of INCEPTION as 'a very electronic, dense score, filled with nostalgia and sadness'. What I love best about the score is how it changes as the characters move deeper and deeper into the 'dream within a dream.' The deeper they go, the more “unreal' the music becomes." (Film Music Central, 2017)."All the music in the score is subdivisions and multiplications of the tempo of the Édith Piaf track. So I could slip into half-time; I could slip into a third of a time. Anything could go anywhere. At any moment I could drop into a different level of time. [...] Everybody thinks the dream is the important part. For me, the time was the important part: the idea that, in a peculiar way, Chris (Nolan) had made a time-travel movie that actually worked.”- Hans Zimmer on the music for Inception.(Itzkoff, 2010)

"ANTHROPOID (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" is an album by Robin Foster, released 1st January 2016 via Lakeshore Records. The classical music by Robin Foster, provides the soundtrack for much of the heavy artillery fire and preserves the message behind the dense cargo narrative. (Hoban, 2016)."With 'Valkyrie' we had a very good idea of things would turn out, but with 'Anthropoid' we don’t. Bullets fly all over the place and emotions are shattered to where we can’t look away, and this is aided by a pounding music score composed by Guy Farley and Robin Foster." Soundtrack for A QUIET PLACE: PART II."It all started with the first one. All the musical material was an extension of things I had done in the first movie. So I guess you could say the process began about four years ago when I first met John and started talking about the music for it. There are some new musical themes in this one, but for the most part, it’s the same world—the picture itself is the same world. He (John Krasinski) really wanted to keep the world of the first movie alive in the second movie. It wasn’t really a question of reinventing the wheel for this movie but more extending the sonorities and the harmonies and the melodies and the themes that we’d already established. As I was working on it, I met him once when we first screened the movie, he came out to Paramount. After that, he was really busy working in New York so I’d send the music through the music editor to play for him. At one point he wanted to hear more options on certain things—the new thematic stuff, a new character. For the most part that was pretty minor in terms of what I did. It was pretty straightforward."- Marco Beltrami, on the music for A Quiet Place: Part II.(Marco Beltrami. The Unofficial website of the composer, 2021)

Soundtrack for OPPENHEIMER.“We embarked on a mission to create a score that could authentically convey the intricate inner world and journey of Oppenheimer,” Goransson said. “With the violin serving as the emotional core of the music alongside string ensembles, an impressive display of brass and nuclear synths underpinning the impending doom that was to come, the score swiftly transcends from a personal journey to a grandiose and almost operatic spectacle, oscillating between realms of hope and despair. Working with an exceptionally talented group of musicians, we were able to capture nuanced performances that would add another dimension to the breathtaking visual world and performances of Oppenheimer, forging what we hope will be a transportive experience for the audience."- Ludwig Goransson, on the music for Oppenheimer.(Jackson, 2023).

Milan Records released the soundtrack on 16 January 2026, the same day as the film 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE.Hildur Guðnadóttir went full balistic with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Besides playing a mammoth horn on the score, the kind prepped and ready for a battle cry, the Hildur played bone instruments for film. She tried to extrapolate each emotion beautifully. For the evil characters, Guðnadóttir opted for strings of terror. As for the film’s hero characters, such as Dr. Kelson, she wanted sounds of beauty for the hopeless, infected world. The score clashes and roars, as if the audience is in the belly of the beast. (Giroux, 2026)."I was keen on having the texture of the bones in the music. There’s such a specific texture to bones when you make any sound with them. Actually, most instruments that are not strings or metal are made from bones. All the percussion is played on actual bones. I did all these bone flutes. One of the main instruments is this horn"- - Hildur Guðnadóttir, on the music for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.(Giroux, 2026).

Fractured Air was a music site based on independent music to feel passionate about. It was active from 2012 until 2020. One of its main contributors is irish artist Craig Carry. The importance of this blog is that it would usually feature incredible Irish musicians and artists who would get invited to make and share their own mixtapes, as well as offer interviews or tell anecdotes related to music, film, art and daily life.Cillian Murphy was featured in some blog entries throughout the years. Sometimes interviewing an artist for their recent album, other times narrating what he did all year, or which bands he was listening to in the moment. But ultimately? He shared a few mixtapes curated by him.HERE you will find all the Fractured Air blog entries featuring him.

Now, in the meantime, here it is the mixtapes he curated for the site!

“Walking to town through Sunday’s Well
(Sounds From a Safe Harbour)”

"'Walking to town through Sunday’s Well (sounds from a safe harbour)' is a mixtape compiled by the Cork-born actor to coincide with the inaugural Sounds From A Safe Harbour Festival, curated by The National’s Bryce Dessner and programmed by Cork Opera House, which takes place across various venues in Cork City from 17–20 September 2015."“The tunes work vaguely chronologically and run from when I lived in Sunday’s Well in Cork in around 1996, what I was listening to and discovering around then and then develop into stuff I’m into at the moment. I also tried to make it feel like a journey from one destination to another. Tried, Ha! For example, my wife used to listen to this classic Laurie Anderson tune all the time back then and I thought it was completely bonkers – but now almost 20 years later I have grown to love it. It was such a time for dance music, DJ Shadow blew us all away when we heard him for the first time, but at the same time I discovered Jeff Buckley, was still in love with the Traveling Wilburys and was obsessed with Stevie wonder – it’s all in there. Some of the contemporary tunes are meant to reflect back on those times I suppose.
Plus now we have this incredible groundbreaking festival of music about to take place in Cork City. Sounds from a safe harbour. Good times. Enjoy…”
